Measuring pH
There are different ways to measure a substance's pH.  The two most common methods, and those with which you are probably most familiar, involve using an indicator or a pH meter.

An indicator is a compound that turns one color in acidic solutions, and turns another color in basic solutions.

A pH meter is an electronic device with a probe that is placed into the substance being measured; the device displays the pH value on a digital readout.
